Last week my 11 year old had the exciting opportunity to dive into radio and podcasting at the California Historical Radio Society’s working museum. Along with about 20 other campers from 6th to 10th grade, she dove into real radio—from vintage audio tools to modern editing. Her days were full of script writing, recording, audio mixing, and even team-run live morning shows. My kid’s group produced a 4-minute pro- and con segment on Taylor Swift. Of course my kid took a firm Pro position. The week was taught by Bay Area broadcasting professionals, and some kids like mine got generous scholarships.
Coming right after Radio Day on July 19, this hands-on camp teaches 6th‑10th graders the foundations of electronics, wireless tech, and tinkering with real devices. Ideal for curious kids who love to build, test, and learn by doing.
CHRS’s annual summer showcase returns bigger and better. Expect live jazz, a radio drama, museum tours, electronics flea market, vintage-radio auction, food trucks—and a kid-friendly boombox-building contest! The whole family is welcome. Free admission with optional auction paddle.
Nestled at Radio Central in Alameda, CHRS is a wonderful museum, a fully functional audio lab, and a thriving community space. They preserve vintage gear and bring it to life, making each program both a lesson and an experience.
Maybe best of all? Students come home proud of something they built: a story, a radio drama, or a custom boombox.
