Are You Ready to Create a Life You Love and Start Homeschooling for Real this Year?

It isn’t the same as Covid-schooling. It’s so much better.

I have a passionate interest in coaching moms to create homeschool and family lives they love. Lately I have a particular pull to write for you moms who are ready to start homeschooling for real.

Trust me. You’re going to love doing your own thing so much more.

My aim is to help you who have tried who tried Covid-schooling and found it somewhat lacking. Crisis-schooling is totally different from actual homechooling, and I truly believe you will love homeschooling so much more.

2021 Homeschooling will look nothing like 2020 Homeschooling for a lot of us.

In our part of California, 2020 was pretty much closed. On the plus side, we spent a lot of time outside, I forgot how to drive, academics got a lot of attention, and it was absolutely awesome to have my husband working at home! The minus side was my kids’ extracurriculars moving to Zoom, my own teaching (history, lit, and middle school social groups) moving to Zoom, our whole family’s general Zoom fatigue, eventual nausea from even hearing the word Zoom, and a general disregard for our usual moderately-limited rules around leisure screen time.

Also, you know: the Zoom.

Mostly I missed our little extended village. In our regular life we are never-at-homeschoolers. We meet up with friends for things like physics experiments at the beach, history projects in the parks, and nature journaling creekside. We are a small group and we hike a lot, chat a lot, have a lot of fun. Our friends who like tea bring tea to share, and friends who like coffee bring coffee. There is always fresh fruit and the bakers in the group keep us well-fed with delicious things. Adults catch up while the kids play, and learning is fun and hands-on. We get plenty of sunshine; the kids stay tan year-round. We go on amazing field trips regularly, and when we do we can stay all day if we want to. It is such a good, organic way of learning and living. We are so very lucky.

The fall was like spring.

We were largely on our own. We still spent a lot of time outside. The garden stayed wild but the planter beds got a lot of attention. We also had much more time to dive deep into our books, the games, the inside table work. Life was less about experiential fun in a group but, man, did we crush our academic targets.

So I decided to stop feeling powerless and start trying to help…

And so, as I plan the curriculum for the new year (this year that may well be my older kid’s last at home) I know there are many other parents out there who may be are just starting out, maybe freaking out, not knowing where to start homeschooling, and who may be so stressed in this strange time.

This blog is for you, freaked-out new homeschool mom. Your homeschool life will get happier. I promise.

For most of us, this past year has looked nothing like real life. But it can- and I believe it will- get so much better. You’re at the start of something big and I’m so glad to share what I know with you!
